How We Research
Every guide on Sharpened Axe starts with one question: will this product suit the person who is shopping for it? For chainsaws, that means the trees and wood you have, how often you'll cut and how much weight and upkeep you'll put up with.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with your yard
A few branches after a storm, a winter's worth of firewood and a row of hedges call for different tools. A saw built for one job can be a poor fit for another.
We check the power type, the bar length and the weight. When your property limits the choice, we say what to look for.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at the power type (gas, corded or battery), bar and chain size, engine size or voltage, weight and what comes in the box. For battery saws we also check whether the battery and charger are included or sold separately.
Husqvarna, Stihl, Echo, Oregon and the other makers describe their saws in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read through what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like hard starting, chain oil leaks, short run time and loose parts.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell similar models and kits under close names, so we check each model number and what comes in the box, and we only link new units.
We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.
A chainsaw can cause serious injury. We don't call any saw or piece of gear safe, and we label maker claims as the maker's claims.
Read the manual and follow the maker's guidance on protective gear, fuel and use.
